Ghost is spelled with GH, but the H is silent, and it did not belong to the word at first. It slipped in through an old spelling and stuck.
First, how do you pronounce it?
GOHST
It starts with a plain G, like in go. The H makes no sound at all.
The weird part
Look at what GH does in other words:
tough → GH says F
night → GH is silent
ghost → GH says G
The same two letters do three different jobs. In ghost, the G works and the H is just along for the ride.
You can read more about these in Why Is There a GH in "Night"? and Ghoti: How Can It Spell "Fish"?.
Where did the H come from?
The word is old. In Old English it was gast, and it meant "spirit". In Middle English it was spelled gost, with no H.
Then, in the 1400s, the early English printer William Caxton wrote the word with gh. It may have been influenced by the Flemish and Middle Dutch word gheest, which has an H after the G. The spelling was rare in English until the middle of the 1500s. After that it spread, and it won.
The reveal
Ghost was gost for a long time. The H only appeared when Caxton wrote it that way, possibly copying a foreign spelling, and later writers kept it.
👻 The H is contagious
The sneaky H spread to some other words:
- ghastly picked up its gh in the 1500s by copying ghost.
- aghast (meaning shocked) also ended up with gh, and that became the usual spelling after 1700. Flemish spelling or the look of ghost may be behind it.
Neither word needed the H before, and neither one says it.

🥡 The OddLingo Takeaway
The H in ghost is a spelling ghost: you can't hear it, and it was added later.
When you spell it, think G-H-O-S-T, then say GOHST.
