Eleven and twelve are not "oneteen" and "twoteen" because they come from older words that meant "one left" and "two left" after counting to ten.
The weird part
Look at the numbers after ten:
thirteen → three + ten
fourteen → four + ten
fifteen → five + ten
The pattern is plain: a number, plus teen, which comes from ten. (The number part changes a little in thirteen and fifteen, but you can still hear it.) So you would expect:
❌ oneteen
❌ twoteen
But English says eleven and twelve. The first two are the exception.
Eleven: one left
In Old English, eleven was endleofan, and the word is understood to mean one left. It comes from a word for one and a very old root that means to leave. So eleven is ten, with one left over.
The Middle English form elleovene is recorded around the year 1200.
Twelve: two left
Twelve came from the Old English twelf. It means two left. The first part is related to the word two, and the second part is the same "leave" root as in eleven.
So twelve is ten, with two left over. Notice the tw- in twelve, just like two, twin and twice.
Why not keep going?
A Mental Floss article suggests that early speakers did not need many numbers above ten, so the first two got their own words. Eleven and twelve were used often in daily life, so they stuck and became habits. The longer numbers, from thirteen on, use the plain -teen pattern.
🧐 Did You Know?
Eleven is also the name for a team of eleven players in sports such as cricket and football. That meaning is recorded from 1743.

⏳ The OddLingo Timeline
one left over after ten → "endleofan" → "elleovene" around 1200 → "eleven" and two left over after ten → "twelf" → "twelve". Then from thirteen on: number + teen.
🥡 The OddLingo Takeaway
Eleven means "one left". Twelve means "two left". The -teen rule starts at thirteen.
If you ever forget, remember: after you count to ten, eleven and twelve are what is left.
