Hot Potato

A hot potato is a tricky problem or topic that nobody wants to handle, so people keep passing it on, like something too hot to hold.

Cartoon illustration of four children sitting around a round table in a classroom, passing a steaming potato from hand to hand. One child squeezes their eyes shut and winces while holding it, another laughs and says "It's a hot potato!", and a brown-and-white dog holds a sign reading "NOT ME!". A thought bubble shows a plate and cutlery crossed out with a red X, labelled "Not dinner!", beneath the title "Hot Potato: a tricky problem nobody wants".

⚡ Quick Meaning

A hot potato is a problem or topic that is awkward, tricky or unpopular, so everybody tries to avoid it or pass it on.

🥔 Wait... What Is Hot About It?

HOT + POTATO

Something you can eat? ❌
Something nobody wants to handle? ✅

Think about a baked potato straight from the oven. It stays hot for a long time, and it is much too hot to hold. What do you do? You toss it from hand to hand, or put it down quickly.

The idiom uses that picture for an issue that is too awkward to hold. Nobody wants to be the one who has it, so they pass it on.

Word-history writers say the exact first use of the phrase is not clear. A big dictionary, Merriam-Webster, records the meaning of "a tricky issue" from 1950.

There is also a children's game called hot potato, where players pass an object around quickly before the music stops. It is the same idea: nobody wants to be holding it when the time runs out.

🎬 Picture the Situation

The class needs someone to explain to the teacher that the football went onto the roof again. Everybody looks at the ceiling, the floor, their shoes.

Nobody wants this job. It is a hot potato.

🗣️ Natural Examples

Who will tell Grandma the cake was dropped? Everybody is passing the hot potato.
The question of whose turn it is to feed the class hamster became a hot potato.
When she heard about the broken window, Maya dropped the idea like a hot potato.
The new rule about snacks in class is a bit of a hot potato, so the teacher asked everyone to vote.

💬 In a Conversation

Leo: Can you ask Mr Green about the trip money?
Priya: Why me?
Leo: It is a hot potato.
Priya: Then I will pass it on to Dan.
Leo: Please do not. He ate the last potato.

🧭 When Do You Use It?

  • A topic that is awkward or tricky for everyone
  • A job or a decision that nobody wants to take on
  • A problem that gets passed from person to person
  • Drop something like a hot potato: stop something quickly because it has become a problem

🎓 Common Learner Point

  • A hot potato is a thing (a problem or topic): It is a hot potato.
  • Drop like a hot potato is about speed: She dropped the plan like a hot potato. It is the same picture of a hand letting go.
