Your vs You're: Same Sound, Different Jobs

Your shows that something belongs to you; you're means "you are". Learn the swap test and the "my, her, our" clue.

They sound the same, so your ears can't help you. Your eyes and one tiny test can.

  • Your shows that something belongs to you.
  • You're is a short form of you are.

Your: it belongs to you

Your shows ownership. It sits in front of a noun and tells you whose it is.

Did you bring your lunch?
Your brother is waiting outside.
I love your new backpack!

Your belongs with the other ownership words: my, his, her, our and their. None of them has an apostrophe, and neither does your.

You're: you are

You're is two words squeezed into one. The apostrophe marks the missing letter, the a in are.

You're the fastest runner in the class.
You're going to love this song.
You're welcome to sit here.

🤔 Why do they get mixed up?

Two reasons make this pair sneaky:

  • They sound the same in everyday speech. Your ears can't tell you which spelling is needed.
  • Apostrophes usually show ownership. In Mia's bike, the apostrophe means "belongs to Mia". So it feels natural to add one to your. But here, the apostrophe does the opposite job.

There's an old twist too. Your is a very old ownership word. In Old English it was eower, the possessive form of ge, an old word for "you" (the word we now write as ye). You're is the newcomer, made by squeezing you are together.

Easy way to tell them apart

Say the sentence with you are in the gap.

  • It works: use you're.
  • It sounds strange: use your.

Is that ___ jacket on the chair?
Is that you are jacket? That sounds strange, so write your.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Ownership? No apostrophe.
❌ Is that you're jacket?
✅ Is that your jacket?

Meaning "you are"? Add the apostrophe.
❌ Your going to love this song.
✅ You're going to love this song.

Saying thanks back? It's you are welcome.
❌ Your welcome!
✅ You're welcome!

📌 Good to know

  • The swap test works for other apostrophe look-alikes too. See Its vs It's and Their vs There vs They're for the same trick with it is and they are.
  • When the ownership word stands alone, it's yours, with no apostrophe. That seat is yours, never your's.
  • A third twin can join in: yore, as in "days of yore" (long ago), can sound the same in some accents too.
  • Spell-checkers don't always catch this mix-up, because both words are real words. Do the swap test before you press send.

💬 In a conversation

Mia: Is this your bag?
Sam: No, you're thinking of Priya's. Mine is the blue one.
Mia: Oops. You're right, and your bag has the dinosaur sticker.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Your sits with my, her and our. If one of those would fit, write your.

You're has a tiny hole where the a of are fell out. That hole is the apostrophe.

No letter missing? No apostrophe.
