Three words, nearly the same letters, three different jobs.
- Wear is a verb: to have clothes on.
- Where is a question word: it asks about a place.
- Were is the past of are.
Wear: clothes
Wear means to have something on your body, such as clothes, a hat, glasses or a smile. Its past is wore, and its past participle is worn.

It also means to be damaged by use: The rope will wear thin.
Where: places
Where asks about a place, or tells you which place.

I do not know where I left my keys.
Were: the past of are
Were is a past tense of the verb to be. It goes with you, we and they, and plural nouns.

If I were you, I would take the umbrella.
They sound different, or the same?
- Wear and where sound exactly the same.
- Were sounds different. It rhymes with fur and her, not with air.
Easy way to tell them apart
Ask three questions:
- Is it about clothes or something that wears out? Wear.
- Is it about a place? Where.
- Is it the past of are? Were.
