Wait and expect both look forward to something. The difference is what you do.
- Wait is about staying until something happens. Your body or your time is waiting.
- Expect is about believing that something will happen. It is a thought in your mind.
Wait: staying until it happens
Use wait when you stay in a place, or hold back, until something arrives or starts. Wait usually needs for before the thing or person.
I am waiting for the bus.
Please wait for me at the door.
Mia waited for her friend after school.
We waited an hour, and then we left.
You can say wait without anything after it: Wait! I forgot my bag.
You can also wait to do something: I cannot wait to see you.
Expect: believing it will happen
Use expect when you think something will happen, or you think someone should do something. Expect does not use for.
I expect rain this afternoon.
We expect to arrive at six.
The teacher expects us to be on time.
I expect that Leo will win.
After expect, you can use a noun, to plus a verb, that plus a sentence, or someone to do something.
Easy way to tell them apart
Ask: am I standing still, or am I thinking ahead?
- Standing still, holding back. Use wait (for).
- Thinking that it will happen. Use expect.
I am waiting for the bus. (I stand at the stop.)
I expect the bus to be late. (I think it will be late.)
You can do both at the same time: I am waiting for the bus, and I expect it to be late.
💡 The OddLingo Trick
Think of your feet and your head.
- Wait is for your feet: you stay at the bus stop.
- Expect is for your head: you think about what will happen.
