Tall vs High: Up From the Ground

Tall describes people, trees and narrow things that stand up, and high tells you how far something is above the ground.

Both words are about going up, but English splits the job in two.

  • Tall is about how much a person, a tree or a thin object stands up.
  • High is about how far something is above the ground, or how far up a measurement goes.

Tall: standing up

Use tall for people and for things that grow or stand up from the ground, especially thin ones such as trees, chimneys and towers.

My cousin is much taller than me.
The tall tree shaded the whole playground.
A giraffe is a very tall animal.
How tall are you?

How tall are you? is the normal question for a person's height. How high are you? is not.

High: how far above the ground

Use high for distance above the ground, and for measurements such as how high a wall is.

The bird flew high above the roof.
The shelf is too high for me to reach.
The garden wall is two metres high.
The plane climbed high into the clouds.

In measurements, high comes after the number: two metres high.

When both work

Buildings can be either. A tall building and a high building are both natural.

Easy way to tell them apart

Ask: Is it a person or a thin thing standing up? Or is it about how far above the ground something is?

  • Person, tree, tower: tall.
  • Shelf, kite, bird, wall measurement: high.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

A giraffe is tall. A kite is high.

You cannot lift a giraffe off the ground, but you can fly a kite way above it. Tall belongs to things that stand with their feet on the ground. High belongs to things that are above it.
