Scared vs Scary: Who Feels It, and Who Causes It?

Scared is how a person feels, and scary is what causes the feeling, and there is no word 'scaring' to fill the gap.

Both words are about being frightened, but they point in opposite directions: one is about the person and the other is about the thing.

  • Scared is how a person feels.
  • Scary is what makes a person feel scared.

Scared: how you feel

Scared describes the person (or animal) who has the feeling.

The puppy felt scared during the thunderstorm.
I was scared when the lights went out.
Are you scared of the dark?

You can also say what the fear is about, with a small word:

  • scared of something: scared of spiders, scared of getting lost
  • scared to do something: scared to jump off the high board
  • scared by the thing that gave you a fright: scared by a sudden noise

Scary: what causes it

Scary describes the thing, place or situation that gives people a fright.

The film was scary, so we watched it with the lights on.
The old attic looked scary in the dark.
That roller coaster is the scariest ride in the park.

You can even use it for a person, but only to say that they seem frightening: the mask made him look scary. It does not say how that person feels.

🌀 The odd part: there is no "scaring"

Look at the rule from bored vs boring: the feeling gets -ed and the cause gets -ing.

  • bored → boring
  • frightened → frightening
  • terrified → terrifying

So you would expect scared → scaring. But English does not do that. The cause word for scared is scary, with a Y.

❌ The film was scaring.
✅ The film was scary.

(Scaring does exist, but only as the action of the verb: the dog is scaring the cat.)

Easy way to tell them apart

Ask: who has the feeling, and who or what causes it?

  • The one who has the feeling: scared.
  • The one who causes it: scary.

The film is scary. The audience is scared.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Think of the roles.

Scared has the same ending as bored: it is the person who feels it.

Scary is the -ing word wearing a Y costume. It is the thing that makes the feeling.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Do not call yourself scary by accident.
❌ I am scary of the dark.
✅ I am scared of the dark.

Do not call a film scared.
❌ The film was scared.
✅ The film was scary.

There is no scaring adjective.
❌ It was a scaring story.
✅ It was a scary story.

Use of, not from.
❌ She is scared from dogs.
✅ She is scared of dogs.

📌 Good to know

  • You can make both words stronger: very scared, really scary.
  • Afraid is another feeling word, and it is a loner: it has no -ing partner. I am afraid of heights, but we say the heights are scary.
  • Frightened and terrified are close cousins of scared, and they do have partners (frightening, terrifying). Terrified is the strongest of the three.

💬 In a conversation

Sam: Are you scared of the haunted-house ride?
Mia: I am scared because the ride is scary.
Sam: So you are the scared one, and the ride is the scary one?
Mia: Exactly. Now please hold the scary ride's hand.
Sam: It does not have a hand!
Mia: That is the scary part.

🎯 Test Your Skill

Do not be scared. It is only grammar.
