Passed vs Past: One Moves, One Is Time

Passed is a verb for moving by or going on, while past is mostly about time, so the two sound the same but do different jobs.

Passed is a verb: the past tense of pass. Past is a describing word for time or a word that shows you go by something.

  • Passed: moved by, handed over, or gone by. The car passed me.
  • Past: about earlier time, or by a place. In the past. He walked past the shop.

Passed: the verb

Passed is the past tense of pass. It is a verb, so it always has a person or thing doing something.

The bus passed our house.
Sam passed the salt to Mia.
We passed the test.
Two hours passed before the train came.

Past: time, and the word that goes by

Past is not a verb. It can be a noun, a describing word, or a little word that shows direction.

Noun: In the past, people wrote letters.
Describing word: I have been busy for the past week.
Going by: She ran past the shop.
Time: It is half past two.

Easy way to tell them apart

Change the sentence into the present tense. If pass or passes fits, use passed. If it does not, it is probably past.

The car passed me. → The car passes me. ✅ (so, passed)
The car went past me. → The car went passes me. ❌ (so, past)

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Passed has -ed, so it is a verb doing something.

Past is the word for time or for "going by". If you cannot add -ed, and the sentence is about the old days or going by a place, write past.

A little rhyme: Passed is an action, past is a place or a time.
