Lead vs Led

Led is the past tense of the verb lead. The trap is the metal lead, which is said the same way as led but spelled like the verb.

Lead and led look related, and they are. But there's a sound trap in the middle that makes people spell the past tense wrongly.

The Meanings

Lead (verb, said "leed") means to guide or go first. Its past tense is led.

She will lead the team today.
She led the team yesterday.

Lead (noun, said "led") is a soft, heavy, grey metal.

The old pipe was made of lead.

How They Sound

  • The verb lead is said LEED.
  • The metal lead is said LED.
  • The past tense of the verb is also said LED, but it's spelled led.

So the metal and the past tense sound the same, but only the metal is spelled lead.

Why the Confusion Happens

Because the metal lead is said "led", people expect the past tense to be spelled lead too. It isn't. Merriam-Webster suggests a quick test: if the verb you mean sounds like led, spell it led.

For more about words with one spelling and two sounds, see Tear, Wind, Lead.

🗣️ Natural Examples

Ben led the way home.
The teacher led us to the library.
Who will lead the discussion tomorrow?
The water pipe was made of lead.

🧠 Memory Trick

Ed led the seal to bed. Say it out loud: the rhyme shows that led sounds like Ed and bed.

Another way in: the past tense has no "a". If something already happened, don't add the extra letter: led.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

❌ She lead us to the door yesterday.
✅ She led us to the door yesterday.

❌ The metal is called led.
✅ The metal is called lead.

✅ Quick Check

  1. Yesterday our teacher _____ the class outside. (led)
  2. Who will _____ the group tomorrow? (lead)
  3. Old pipes were sometimes made of _____. (lead)

💡 The OddLingo Trick

The metal and the past tense say the same sound but wear different spellings. Check the time: already happened = led.
