Job vs Work: Why You Can't Have a Work

A job is one particular position you can count, while work is the activity itself and cannot be counted, so you have a job but you do work.

You have a job, and you do work. Job is one position you can count, and work is the activity, which you cannot count.

  • Job: one position with a name, like teacher, baker or bus driver. You can count it: a job, two jobs.
  • Work: the activity of doing something useful, or the place you do it. You cannot count it: some work, a lot of work.
  • Work can also be a verb. Job cannot.

Job: a position you can count

A job is a particular position, usually with a name. Because each job is one thing, we say a job or jobs.

My dad has a job at the library.
Mia wants a job that lets her feed penguins.
Grandpa had three different jobs before he became a baker.
What is your job?

A job can also mean one small task: Cleaning the fish tank is a big job.

Work: the activity itself

Work is what you do, not the position you have. It is usually uncountable, so we do not use a or the plural. We use words like some, a lot of and much.

Dad is at work until six.
I have a lot of work to do today.
The teacher said, "Good work, everybody!"
Sam went to work by bike.

Notice that work can mean the place too: at work, to work, from work.

The verb: work

Only work can be a verb, to do your job or to function.

My mum works at a hospital.
The robot does not work. It needs a battery.
❌ My mum jobs at a hospital.

Easy way to tell them apart

Try putting a in front, or an s at the end.

  1. Can you say a ___ and two ___s? Then it is a job.
  2. Do you want to say some ___ or a lot of ___? Then it is work.

What is your job? I am a teacher.
What do you do at work? I teach.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

A job is a name tag you can wear: baker, pilot, vet. You can swap name tags, so you can have two.

Work is a river of effort. You can pour a lot of it, but you cannot hold a river. You can only say some, or a lot of.

So there is a job, but only some work.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Do not say a work or works for a position.
❌ My dad has a good work.
✅ My dad has a good job.

Do not count work.
❌ I have many works to finish.
✅ I have a lot of work to finish.

Say go to work, not go to the job.
❌ I go to the job by bus.
✅ I go to work by bus.

Job is not a verb.
❌ She jobs at a bakery.
✅ She works at a bakery.

📌 Good to know

  • A work can exist, but it means something else: a work of art, or the works of Shakespeare. Then it means something that was made, not a position.
  • Homework is also uncountable, like work: We have a lot of homework.
  • Work and job also have a few fixed phrases. We say a good job for praise (Good job!), and good work for the same idea: Good work!
  • To ask what someone's position is, use job: What is your job? To ask about their daily routine, use work: How do you get to work?

💬 In a Conversation

Mia: What's your job?
Leo: I'm a snow-shoe tester. It's a lot of work.
Mia: Do you like going to work?
Leo: Every morning. Well, every winter morning.

🎯 Test Your Skill

A job you count, work you pour.
