Historic vs Historical: Famous or Just Past?

Historic means important enough to be remembered in history, while historical simply means connected to history or the past.

Both words are about history, but they ask different questions.

  • Historic asks: is it important? A historic event is famous and will be remembered.
  • Historical asks: is it about the past? A historical fact is simply from history.

Historic: important in history

Use historic for a moment, place or event that matters a lot.

Today was a historic day for our school. We won the national quiz.
The team made a historic win after fifty years.
We visited a historic castle.

A historic moment is one you expect people to talk about for a long time.

Historical: about the past

Use historical for anything connected to history, big or small.

Mia reads historical stories about castles.
The museum keeps historical records of the town.
That film shows historical events, but the characters are made up.

You can have a historical fact that is not at all famous.
