Canvas vs Canvass: Painting or Asking?

Canvas and canvass sound exactly the same. A canvas is a strong cloth used for paintings, tents and sails, while to canvass means to go around asking people for their opinions.

Canvas and canvass are homophones: they sound exactly the same, but one is a thing you can touch and the other is something you do.

  • Canvas is a noun: a heavy, strong cloth.
  • Canvass is a verb: to go around asking people for their opinions or support.

Canvas: the cloth

Canvas is a thick, strong cloth. Artists paint on it, and it is used to make tents, sails and some shoes.

The artist painted a sunset on a large canvas.
Our camping tent is made of thick canvas.
He wore white canvas shoes to sports day.
The sailboat's canvas filled with wind.

Canvass: asking people

Canvass is mostly a verb. It means to go around asking people what they think. The noun canvass is the act of doing this: a quick canvass of the class.

The students will canvass the class for ideas about the trip.
Two students canvassed their classmates about the school garden.
Before the bake sale, we made a quick canvass to find out which cakes people liked.

Easy way to tell them apart

Ask: Is it a thing I can touch, or something I do?

  • A tent, a sail or a painting surface? Canvas.
  • Walking around and asking everyone for ideas? Canvass.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Asking? Use canvass.
❌ The club will canvas the class for ideas.
✅ The club will canvass the class for ideas.

A painting surface is canvas.
❌ She painted a sunset on a big canvass.
✅ She painted a sunset on a big canvas.

📌 Good to know

Some dictionaries also list canvas as a less common spelling of the asking verb. For writing, canvass is the spelling to learn when you mean asking people.

The cloth word comes from a Latin word for hemp, the plant whose fibres can be made into strong cloth. The history of the asking verb is less certain, and you don't need it to tell the two words apart.

Leo: I'll grab a clipboard. Should we paint the ideas on your canvas tote bag?
Mia: Clipboard first. Paint later.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Canvas is something you can touch: stretched cloth for a painting, a tent or a sail. Canvass is an action: you walk around, ask questions and listen. If you can hold it, it's canvas. If you have to do it, it's canvass.
